This is the Lake District National Park's most dazzling resort as well as being England's largest natural lake. It is surrounded by fantastic fell scenery, and fed by numerous rivers and little streams flowing down from the hills. The views all around are singularly magnificent, especially from Orrest Head, a 748 foot hill to the north of the town, this opens up a sublime panorama of breathtaking beauty. Biskey How, at only 300 feet is a more gentle climb, this lies east of the Windermere suburb of Bowness, and offers equally stunning views.
Bowness-on-Windermere is a quaint place, with narrow streets (usually crammed with holiday-makers), a 15th-century church and good views across the lake. It is also the home of Royal Windermere Yacht Club.
Windermere offers superb sailing facilities, it is also popular place for canoeing, windsurfing, and water-skiing. For holidaymakers without their own boat there pleasure trips on a river Steamer where you can relax in comfort whilst admiring the mountains
Inland from the lake visitors find the scenery just as attractive, east of the lake Gummers How rises to 1054 feet, it can be easily reached, with a climb of around 40 minutes to reach the summit. Almost everywhere you look in this glorious landscape there are mountain becks tumbling down rocks forming dramatic waterfalls. Stockghyll Force waterfall ricochets down for 70ft, this can be found near Ambleside.
England's Lake District has been immortalised by Wordsworth, Ruskin and Beatrix Potter, the vivid scenery and magical little hidden gems which captivated these and other artists, remains just as enchanting today.
Windermere is a paradise for sailing enthusiasts, walkers and nature lovers, for those wishing to stay there is a wide choice of holiday accommodation, plenty of beautiful places to explore, interesting little shops, and pleasant inns and restaurants.
